Auto Repair POS Software

Ring Up the Counter Sale Right the First Time

A counter sale rung up wrong costs a shop twice: once at the register and again at month-end when the register and the books disagree and nobody can say why. An auto repair pos software is a repair shop’s checkout screen. It rings up parts, supplies, and quick services from the same catalog, tax settings, and customer records your repair orders already use. Torque360 Quick Checkout is the automotive POS software built into that workflow. Trusted by 1,000+ independent repair shops across auto, truck, motorcycle, RV, and powersports.

  • Counter sales without opening a repair order

  • Line-level control over discounts, tax, and fees

  • In-person card payments through TorquePay

  • House accounts for fleet and trade customers

  • Built into the platform that runs your bays

How It Works?

How Does an Automotive POS System Work
at a Repair Shop Counter?

An auto repair POS system earns its keep on the sales that don’t need a bay. Quick Checkout skips intake, technician assignment, and approval. Just the items, the total, and the payment.

Open Quick Checkout

Click QC in the top-right corner of the dashboard. Search for an existing customer, or choose Walk-in Customer for someone paying and leaving.

Add the Items

Tap a Favorite for the things you sell every day, or search the Internal Catalog. Each item arrives already priced and taxed.

Adjust the Ticket

Change quantities, apply a discount, switch tax off on a single line, and add shop fees. Totals recalculate as you edit.

Check Out

Pick the payment method, attach your terms and conditions, and add a note if the sale needs one. The amount paid fills in from the total.

Integrate Your Entire Workflow

When Should a Sale Go Through Quick Checkout Instead of a Repair Order?

Wrong channel, wrong data. Push a $14 wiper blade through a full repair order, and your car count goes up while your ARO goes down. Ring up a brake job at the counter, and that work leaves no trail on the vehicle. Use the Counter-or-RO Rule: if a technician has to diagnose, inspect, or get approval, it’s a repair order. If the customer already knows what they want and it leaves in a bag or a trunk, it’s Quick Checkout.

The DIY customer buying a serpentine belt and two quarts of 5W-30. A set of tires going out the door unmounted. A case of shop towels for the shop down the street. A quick service with nothing to diagnose. None of these sales have a finding to document or an approval to collect, and none of them needs a bay.

Anything that starts with a check-engine light, a noise, an inspection, or “while it’s in, can you look at…” That work needs the vehicle record, labor guide times, digital authorization, and technician notes, and that’s exactly what a repair order carries. When a comeback or warranty question lands six months later, the RO is your evidence. A counter receipt isn’t.

Yes. A walk-in customer skips the profile for the cash buyer who wants a filter and the door. Creating a profile for every one-time buyer clutters your customer list and your future outreach with people you’ll never see again. When the buyer is a regular, search their name instead.

A retail POS rings up items. A repair shop POS has to live next to repair orders, labor, and fleet accounts. Run counter sales on a retail register beside your shop software, and you keep two price lists and set tax up twice. Then the systems drift. A price changes in one and not the other; a register sale never reaches your shop numbers. With Quick Checkout, the counter is a screen inside your shop system, not a separate machine beside it.

How Should a POS System for Repair Shops Handle Parts, Fees, and Tax?

Most counter mistakes aren’t payment mistakes. They happen on the ticket, before anyone touches a card. Quick Checkout puts each pricing decision on the line item, in front of whoever is working the counter.

Favorites hold your daily sellers, one tap each. Everything else lives in the Internal Catalog, searchable and split by category: parts, tires, wheels, oil and lube, and supplies. Selecting an item pulls in its SKU, vendor, retail price, and tax rate, so nobody quotes a price from memory.

Description, part number, vendor, cost, retail price, quantity, discount, and tax. Cost of sitting next to retail matters more than it looks. When a regular asks for “a better number” on four tires, the person at the counter sees the margin before agreeing to the discount, not three weeks later in a report.

Yes, line by line. A wholesale buyer with a valid resale certificate, a tax-exempt fleet or municipal account, or an item your state doesn’t tax: switch tax off on that line, and the rest of the ticket stays taxed. Sales tax treatment of parts, labor, and fees varies by state, and “we’ll fix it in the books later” is how a sales tax filing goes sideways. Fix it on the line at the time of sale.

Name the fee, choose what it’s calculated on (parts and supplies, tires, wheels, oil, or labor), then pick the method: percentage, fixed amount, or per quantity. A tire disposal fee set per quantity on the tires category charges four times on a set of four and zero times on a can of brake cleaner. A shop supplies charge set as a percentage of parts scales with the ticket. The math follows the rule you picked, not mental arithmetic at the register at 5:45 on a Friday.

How Do Customers Pay at an Auto Repair POS?

Hit Checkout, and the payment panel opens on the same screen. That sounds minor until you’ve watched a $148.50 sale get keyed into a standalone card machine as $184.50.

Credit or debit card, cash, or check, each recorded against the sale. With TorquePay connected, the card runs on a wireless terminal at the counter: tap, chip, or swipe, with Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, and Google Pay contactless accepted. Without TorquePay, a card run on a separate machine gets recorded here by hand, which brings back the typo risk above. Rates and deposit timing sit on the Integrated Payments page.

Because counter disputes are almost always about returns. Electrical parts that were installed and “didn’t fix it,” special orders, opened fluids: your return policy should be attached to the sale before the money moves, not explained after. Quick Checkout attaches your terms at checkout, next to a free-text note for anything specific to that ticket, such as a core return still owed or a part on backorder.

What Happens to a Counter Sale After the Customer Leaves?

The sale is the easy part. A bad POS does its damage later: in the parts count, in QuickBooks, and in the drawer at close. Here is where each piece of a counter sale lands once the customer drives off.

Yes. Counter sales and repair orders draw from the same Internal Catalog, so the part number, vendor, and price match whether the part leaves over the counter or goes on a car in bay three. Inventory Management handles purchase orders, vendor tracking, and stock counts.

Counter payments appear in the Payments report alongside repair order payments, broken out by method. End-of-day cash, card, and check totals come from one screen, which makes counting the drawer a check instead of an investigation.

Yes. Quick Checkout runs in the browser, on the same cloud platform as the rest of Torque360. No local server in the back office. Nothing to install on the counter PC. The owner sees the same records from a laptop at home as the advisor sees at the front desk. The tradeoff: a cloud POS needs an internet connection, so keep a backup (a phone hotspot works) for the afternoon the line goes down.

Counter Sales Come Standard From the Starter Plan

Quick Checkout is included in Torque360 Starter at $89.99/month billed annually, along with estimates, repair orders, inventory management, accounts receivable, and business reporting. The plan that runs your repair orders already runs your counter, so there’s no separate POS subscription stacked on top.

Why Do Shops Pick Torque360’s
Auto Shop POS Software?

See why repair shops choose auto repair POS software that lives inside their shop management system instead of a separate register.

One price change, everywhere

Update a part’s price in the catalog, and the counter and the bays both sell at the new number from the next ticket.

A login for everyone at the counter

The Starter covers five users. Turbo and above remove the limit, so the parts runner and the Saturday cashier don’t share a password.

Help without leaving the screen

Live chat sits inside Torque360. An AI assistant answers common questions instantly, and during support hours (7 AM to 4 PM Pacific) the team picks up the rest, typically within minutes.

How Does Quick Checkout Connect to the
Rest of the Shop Workflow?

Quick Checkout is one screen in a larger system. These are the modules a counter sale touches on its way from the register to the books.

appointment-booking-widget

Book jobs, manage calendars, and reduce no-shows.

digital vehicle inspection software

Capture photos and videos. Add notes and findings.

auto repair estimating software

Build accurate estimates with labor, parts, and pricing.

repair order software

Convert approved work into organized repair orders.

auto repair invoicing software

Generate invoices from completed labor and parts.

auto repair job board software

Track jobs, assign technicians, and monitor progress.

Which Repair Shops Use Quick Checkout?

Counter volume looks different in every shop type. A tire shop sells tires off the rack, a quick lube sells oil and filters by the case, a truck shop sells hardware to fleet drivers who don’t want to wait. Every one of them runs the same Torque360 platform, so the counter works the same way whatever it’s moving. Tire shops and quick lubes can see their vertical workflows on the Tire Shop and Oil Change pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best POS for an auto repair shop is the one built into your shop management system, not a register parked next to it. Judge any option with the fleet ticket test in the demo: ring up one sale for a fleet account with a tax-exempt line and a fee calculated on parts, then put it on the account with Pay Later. If the software can’t do all three on one ticket without a workaround, your counter will feel it every day.

Quick Checkout comes with every Torque360 plan, so the cost is the plan itself, starting at $89.99 a month on Starter, billed annually. Turbo, at $179.99 a month billed annually, is the tier for shops that want integrations and automation on top. TorquePay card processing is a $499 add-on on eligible plans and is included in Supercharged. There is no setup fee.

A computer at the counter with a browser and an internet connection covers the POS itself. For card-present payments, TorquePay uses a wireless counter terminal. Barcode scanner support is included with the Turbo plan.

With TorquePay, card data is captured at the terminal and processed through a PCI DSS-compliant payment gateway, so card numbers never get typed into the counter computer. The bigger exposure in most small shops is a card number written on a work order “to run later.” Make that a fireable offense, not a habit.

Automotive point of sale software handles the checkout: items, fees, tax, and payment. Auto repair shop management software runs the whole job, from appointment and inspection to estimate, repair order, invoice, and follow-up. Torque360 includes both, and Quick Checkout is how the platform handles sales that never become a repair order.
